Ines Varo is an apprentice reader of the Lantern Guild in Halden, and the central figure of the novel The Quiet Signal. Her insignia is one of the most faded in the city — she can recall only four of its points — which is, by her own account, why she became a reader.
Biography
Varo was born in the lowest ring of Halden, to a family of net-menders whose door-copy had been painted over by a previous tenant. She entered the guild at twelve.
In 212 PD, while keeping an unofficial watch on the seventh pylon, she reported seeing its crown light. The guild recorded the claim and declined to confirm it.
Field notes
Varo keeps her notes in pencil, on the grounds that “ink was the thing we used when we couldn’t afford light”. Extracts from them are the main source for several entries in this archive.
Appearances
Varo appears throughout The Quiet Signal, beginning with the first chapter, Nothing Lit.
